Greipel was selected by Geoff at the Inglis Ready to Race Sydney Sales as a 2yo. He was quickly given the stable name of Nugget, a small snitzel.
Greipel is by the sensational sprinting sire Snitzel out of Lotto Rock. This breeding, and the fact that as a 2yo he was already following his sire’s ball of muscle build, seemed the perfect coupling to be named after the German sprinting legend of cycling, Andre Greipel. Andre rides for the World professional team Lotto Soudal and is a ball of muscle himself, sometimes nicknamed the Gorilla. Greipel (the horse) has shown the same true grit as Greipel (the cyclist) in many photo finishes. Both have spirit, but are professional gentlemen.
